During the year of 2013, I undertook to make 52 portraits.
Late in 2012, I had come across a photograph of an old black man on which was written, “When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” This was attributed as an African proverb. I have not been able to locate any other reference to this proverb, but nontheless, it held a great power of truth and suggestion for me.
I wanted to act on the urgency implicit in this statement. Around me were living libraries, people with stories written in their faces. I wanted to catalog a number of these people and do so in a condensed time frame.
